Grand Canyon Helicopters Not All Deals Are Equal

At first it sounds strange for me to disclaim deals on helicopter tours like that. But I’ve been at this a long time and its just lately where travelers are walking in with some crazy prices.

I’m not sure where they are finding these rates. Heck, I’m not sure they’re real. But I do sense that companies out there are getting really creative when it comes to air-tour pricing and that’s where I think I can shed some light on the matter.

Case in point is a gentleman I recently helped. He called up asking me to match a price he found somewhere on Las Vegas Strip helicopter tours. I heard him out, wondering where in the world did he get it so cheap.

Then it came out. It was a “blue-light special.” Not sure if you out there are familiar with K-Mart, which was a huge retailer in the U. S. This company used to fill a shopping cart full of cheap, out-of-date merchandise, turn on a blue siren and make a storewide announcement about the sale.

It worked like gangbusters. Every time.

But I can tell you this. The stuff in the cart was being liquidated. Meaning K-Mart wanted to unload it at a price people found irresistible. And it worked.

I’m not sure how happy people were with their purchases when they arrived back home. Most of the time the stuff broke or was good for few turns and that was it. But think about it. Over time, if you shopped and lived like this, good chance that cheap and fair would cost the same.

So what’s my point, right?

It’s this: If you see a ridiculously low price on a Grand Canyon helicopter tour, question it.

It’s most likely that the tour is what we call “bare bones.” Meaning it comes with nothing. By contrast, a quality tour offered at a fair price should come with lunch, hotel transportation (to and from, not just to the terminal… Yes, I’ve seen it) and include all taxes, fees and surcharges (and yes, here, too, I’ve seen surcharges applied at check in).

Like many, I used to chase down any deal that saved me a few bucks. Over time, I’ve learned to restrain myself. Now I operate on getting a “fair” deal. This type of offer means getting all the extras plus a cancellation policy wherein you don’t have to arm-wrestle some person in customer service to get your money back.

As for the tours themselves, there are two kinds: Aerial and landing. Take the former if you have limited time. These trips, too, are also the cheapest (you’re looking around $230 per person at the time this article was written). However, if you can afford it, by all means book a landing tour.

Landing tours get you up close and personal with the canyon, and that’s really what it’s all about. Las Vegas has the best of the bunch, with the one that lands at the bottom being by far the most popular. I’ve flown it and just the descent alone is worth the money. But that’s from my perspective. Thus as you go into this, keep in mind what you want to see and do and trust your instincts when it comes to price.
